The New Life by Tom Crewe

challenging slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

1.5

I really did not enjoy this book and had I not been reading this for a book club I would definitely have DNF-ed it. I disliked the constant scenes of a sexual nature (I did not want a whole page dedicated to a man shifting a ball off his leg because it had stuck to it), I disliked the comparisons of being gay to having a piss kink, I disliked the classism both in and out of the book and how this was written purely for winning awards, and I disliked the fact that the author chose to leave out how one of the main characters he was writing about was a eugenicist in real life. Also it was incredibly rushed. I wish I was joking about any one of those but sadly I am not. I truly cannot recommend this book.
