The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

5.0

There is the Nigerian struggles and realities. Then there is the Nigerian woman's struggles and realities. Most of which are defined by our own traditions, culture and especially our gender as women.

As a feminist, Chimamanda's books shows the realities of women, both our mothers and even us as young women in Nigeria.

The thing around your neck is a collection of short stories that plunges you into the real world, the true stories women encounter.

From trying to fit into the expectations of society for you to redefining your life in accordance to a man just to again, fit in.

The stories play a preview of how women fair in marriages, families, childbirth, education and even in international waters.

This has been one of my favourite reads because representation matters, especially when you see the reality of what is expected of you in words and seeing that it's okay not to accept it just because it is your culture.

After all people define culture. You choose the one that makes you whole and fulfilled.
