Demon in White
by Christopher Ruocchio
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read.
If you are hesitant to read this series because the first two books (or maybe the first book and first half of the second book) are weak (too derivative of dune/3bp/hyperion) then you should still continue on reading as you can clearly see the writing style refine over each page. The style, plot, themes all become more and more unique. Though that isn’t to say that it becomes dramatically differentiated; it still is very heavily inspired by dune/3bp/hyperion; it’s just that it grows its own two legs and rises to the level of those behemoths, perhaps surpassing them in some aspects.
This book perfectly focuses on the core strengths of the series and drops the parts that aren’t as interesting. Because of that, this book is extremely well paced and just so easy to read with very little slog.
My only critique is that some people consider this book a milsci book - so take that as you will! If you are not super into tactical fight sequences then there may be some drag points here. I personally am not the biggest fan so I did limp a bit to get past some of the chapters, but it was all so worth it in the end.
