Jonas by Jens Bjørneboe

4.0

It's a classic, a must read, and the criticism is still valid.

The book follows the two and a half first years of Jonas primary education, and we are introduced to a great variety of (male) individuals who each are presented with a full background story and complexity of character. We meet his friends, parents, uncle, the staff at two schools and their friends, and of course the helpful strangers. Some of these could be called stereotypes, of course, but this description is more suitable for the female characters. However, the story is still good, and, through Jonas story, we are presented with a critique of the educational sysyem. I would say it is equally important today, when prestige seem to be of increasingly in focus. As is written; "everything a child should learn could be summed up in a word: to go out and turn the world upside down" (loosely translated).
