suspensejunkie 's review for:
End of Story
by A.J. Finn
First and foremost, this is an upmarket "psychological suspense" novel; the dense prose dips into the purple realm and you are bombarded with quotes from Classic writers and flowery literary tangents about life in every paragraph; the author has done too much of everything so we the reader suffer from this turgid mess.
There's no denying that AJ Finn is extremely talented in prose, character, and plot; some of the lines were spectacular and the way a few characters were developed was awesome. However, the novel was deprived of thrills and action, and the wordiness of the sentences bogged the pacing and made reading confusing. The witty repartee was cool at first but after 400 pages of Finn showing his cleverness through his characters, it became draining.
This novel felt masturbatory, Finn really went ham on the thesaurus, wanting to show off his literary skills at the expense of everything else. He could have benefitted from a sharp editor, but I guess after the recent scandals, his publisher did the bare minimum for this book if anything at all.
