Deadpool's Art of War
by Scott Koblish, Peter David
The Art of War by Sun Tzu has been called the definitive work on military strategy and tactics and has influenced warfare and business for hundreds of years. Meaning it’s in the public domain. So can be royally ripped off by Deadpool! Only problem is, the book company won’t pick up his version if he doesn’t have an interesting viewpoint. Deadpool’s solution? Create a war. On Earth.
I’m still new to the comic world, and my boyfriend is slightly more advanced than me (he’s only been reading them for a year or so longer!). On one of our library trips, he basically thrust this collection of 4 volumes at me saying, “You wanna get a head start before we see the movie? Read this.” (Or words to that effect.)
So basically, I did. And I really enjoyed Deadpool actually which, from what I’ve seen of the asshole before, actually surprised me. I really liked the humour and all of the different characters of Marvel’s Universe joining together. If you get the same edition I did too, it’s actually got an entire story in it which was amazing considering I don’t think that’s ever happened to me before. I keep getting Vol. 1 or 2 and then I can’t find the next one along… Sorry for ranting.
The reason this lost a star was because a) it was a bit gore-y (see my review of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I do not do well with gore) and b) Loki, personally, wasn’t for me. I think it’s because he reminded me of someone/thing (I can’t think who) and for some reason that caused a lot of abrasion in my weirdo brain. But I couldn’t really take that away from the overall rating, though. But yeah, gore and me do not mix at all well. However, considering that that was the only thing, that kinda suggests that I liked the comic overall.
I liked how Deadpool’s writers – and the character himself – broke the 4th wall, which I haven’t seen before (seeing the trailer and chatting to the boyf, I already knew that this happened but it was nice actually seeing it for myself). The overall story was fairly entertaining, and the ending amusing. Some of the jokes made me laugh out loud (I did expect it to be funnier, but it was that type of funny where you breathe heavily through your nostrils in most places, and laugh out loud funny in others). It "magpie'd" a surprising amount from Marvel's 2012 film "Avengers Assemble" but I found this quite amusing (although some new original content would have been nice). Overall, I definitely enjoyed it, would read it again, and yes, I totally recommend it.
(PS thanks boyfriend for recommending it to me!)
