The Forest of Lost Souls by Dean Koontz

The audiobook version available on Amazon via Kindle Unlimited is the subject of this review.

Vida, the main character, is one of virtue and integrity. She attempts to unravel the truth of her fiance's death, Jose Nochelobo. Despite Vida's best efforts to flee the traumatic events, trouble finds her and takes root in her soil. She battles the army of a man named Boshvark, who wants to use the plateau for his financial advantage, using blackmail and violence.

In these turbulent times, the characters find direction and purpose under the guidance of a captivating fortune teller whose predictions shape their destinies. One with nature, Vida has developed a deep connection with the wolves in the forest over time, and this bond is critical to her. Are premonitions sufficient to quell a hired army of assassins?

Oh my! I now realize what drew me in so powerfully to Dean Koontz's writing style all those years ago. His exceptional ability to generate tension and evoke strong emotions demands the attention of readers. The scenarios he constructs undeniably carry a magical quality that leaves a lasting impression. The same is true of this novel. Although I must admit that I have not listened to many audiobooks, I thought the narrator's delivery was superb. The story was richer in context thanks to her brilliant voice inflection changes, which added to each individual character immensely.

The theme of David vs. Goliath was prominent in this story. Fighting against a large corporation for the sake of peace and prosperity. Small details, such as Vida's expertise with a bow against her enemies' use of modern technology, struck me as apropos. A rating of 4 of 5 stars, with a slight tendency towards 4.5, seems just about right. Strongly recommended!
