i love josh malerman so i thought i’d give this one a shot! it’s a short novella and easy to read in one sitting.
however, i wasn’t a huge fan of this. something about the writing style didn’t quite work for me and i didn’t find the story that unsettling. i didn’t think it was creepy. it was definitely mysterious since we had to find out what happened to brenda’s sister amanda in the woods, but nothing whatsoever happened until the last chapter and even then it was unticlimactic.
the creature’s quirks also didn’t surprise me because i’ve seen that done before in another book (i forgot the title of it) so that was a bit underwhelming too.
don’t get me started on the parents issue as well. honestly parents like that shouldn’t have children.
in any case, whilst it was a quick and easy read, i don’t think i can recommend it because it wasn’t all that creepy. maybe it’s a good book to try out if you’re a chicken when it comes to short horror books lol.
