The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer
4.0
I really liked this concept. Despite an overlap with many topics commonly used in science fiction (romance in close quarters, AI, clones, new planets...) Schrefer does a marvelous job keeping the plot fresh. I particularly appreciated that the AI (called the OS, or Operating System of the spaceship) is not a black and white character: it is by times strictly observing protocol, humorous, protective, villainous, or merely doing what it has been programmed to do. Reminiscent of The Honors series by Caine and Aguirre and the Murderbot series by Wells, this book was a delight to read. While I feel that the individual clones' experiences could have been depicted in more detail, overall it was a thought-provoking, well-written book that makes us question what it means to be human and whether humanity deserves to go on after Earth is destroyed.
