My second five star book this year, if you’re looking for a book with a modern gothic feel, this is your book. Oh how I wished I had owned a physical copy, so that I could annotate it. I am still thinking about this one, and won’t soon forget it. I already want to reread it as I know it’s one I’ll gain more from with each reread. Now I know this book won’t be for everyone, it’s bleak, and brutal, and the timeline jumps around. But, I loved the structure and three different narrating voices, and how they felt a bit like waves, ebbing and flowing, which felt purposeful, as the setting of this novel surrounds this bass rock, hence the title. Yes it was grim, as the main message is how men perpetuate violence against women, brutal violence, and that violence spans history to the present day. But the story isn’t just about the violence or the patriarchy, it’s also about perseverance, women’s ability to survive, sisterhood, loyalty and friendship in its many forms. I loved it.
