These two are one of my top couples from this universe! 5*

I did not think it would be possible for Chani to write a couple that would rival Kel and Rin. And here we are - I am absolutely obsessed with Nate and Kaz.

He couldn’t recall the last time being in someone’s presence had actually put him at ease. Couldn’t recall the last time someone had made him feel comfortable. Made him feel like…he was home.

The triggers are a must if you are looking for a dark romance but expect the romance itself to be romantic and cute. To me it is still romantic but mainly because I see how both characters need the twisted partner in their life to keep their head above water. If you met someone like Kaz in real life - run!!! Here the HEA was satisfying and swoony still.

Nate and his hurt/comfort journey was well done (and I am a sucker for hurt/comfort). I did not mind the thoughts and other moments we spent in his head. Here it had its place perfectly and served as a characterization. (I'm mentioning this because I criticized the number of inner thoughts in Call of the Sea where I was bored beyond belief.)

This book is an absolute page turner and it is Nate's inner struggles and Kaz's pushy personality that was the icing on top. Wow. Kaz. That asshole. But I just loved every second of him on page. He is similar to Kel but also so so different. I love how Chani creates these characters who might seem the same at first glance but gives them situations where they show you how different they can be. Kaz is a master manipulator who enjoys the power imbalance between the poor Nate and himself who is the rich Brumal.

The possessiveness, jealousy (mutual), the neediness and realizing one's kinks was a journey you need to experience. Baikal and Rabbit are also sometimes present - via texts, conversations or on page. I loved witnessing how down bad Kal still is.

The smut was to die for. Wow. The dirty talk, the o-denial, the toys. Lovely.

I cannot wait for the rest of the books in this universe. I read this bad boy in 24 hours. It is that addicting!

Third-act break up?:
Yes. Though it was not just for the sake of drama. The MC needed a wake up call.
