Beneath the Surface
by Emily McIntire
Unbelievably good!
Ok this book right here has a vice grip on my heart. To say that it was an emotional rollercoaster is a massive understatement. I was a little scared to read this book because I knew Lily’s story would be the heaviest (and don’t get it twisted, it’s HEAVY) but OH. EM. GEE, this book was sooooooo gooood. Yes, Lily’s journey is heartbreaking BUT there is redemption, there is joy, there is perseverance, there is beauty, and there is love. Messy, complicated, deep, and unconditional love. Lily’s love for Baby Chase and the way it always strengthened her will to stay clean and sober was just amazing. The way Mason came into her life to help her heal (not save her) was just….ughhhh my heart. Mason and Baby Chase’s relationship was the most heartwarming thing about this book. The conversations between Chase and Lily where it’s obvious they both hurt but miss each other and are willing to work on their relationship and rebuilding their bond had me all the way in my feelings. I wished that the talks between Lee and Lily about the fall of their friendship would have been longer but I was still glad that they got to a much better place. I simply LOVED that the story wrapped up with all the couples living their happy endings and with Lily and Mason having a beautiful life filled with love. What Lily says at the end about the wind finally having a different meaning for her was just so beautiful that it made me cry. This was my favorite book in the Sugarlake series and Lily wound up being one of my favorite characters. I am so sad the series is over but I can tell I will be revisiting Sugarlake frequently because the book hangover is REAL.
