If I hadn’t watched the show, it would’ve been difficult for me to get through the thick descriptions of chess playing, as someone who has never learned anything about it. The storytelling rises above Beth’s brilliant chess playing to become a coming of age story about a woman who can sidestep and outmaneuver every hurdle life throws at her, especially when her toughest critics think she can’t.
