I recall being fascinated by this story when I first read this back in the nineties. I don't think the story holds up after a few decades. Buffett has a great imagination, but everyone feels like they've been cut from a song. Some novels feel like short stories that have been stretched too far. A lot of "Joe Merchant" feels like songs that have been stretched past short stories. It's a must for diehard Parrotheads, but that's about it.
