The Wish by Nicholas Sparks

Plot or Character Driven: Character

It was fine. I read this as a bookclub read and it is very Nicholas Sparks-y. Main character has cancer and is dying. She weaves the story of her teenage pregnancy where she was shipped from the PNW to North Carolina (of course) to live with her aunt and ends up falling in love with the highly intelligent and crafty homeschooled boy who is the only other person in town her age. He dies before the two ever have a chance to reunite and now she is dying. It turns out the man she is telling this story to is her son who she had given up for adoption and she spends her final days enjoying a growing friendship with him. There is photography mixed in there too.

What I really didn't like his how silly and inexperienced our main character is. She was regularly delighted and surprised by the most simple of things--like s'mores. How am I meant to believe that a 16/17 year old girl had never before heard of s'mores?!

I wouldn't reread this, nor would I recommend to a friend. But it was nice for bookclub.
