I waited four years for this book. I wanted to love it so much. I tried so hard to like it. I struggled to finish it. I’m not sure what happened to the story and characters I fell in love with or how those stories end because this spinoff only gave more questions and cliffhangers to characters, issues, and plot lines that showed up in this book. It could be a really nice conclusion to another trilogy, but I’m a little disappointed and angry that I’ll never get the ten hours of my life back that I devoted to listening to this book. Bahni Turpin brought distinct voices to each character and made it a thrilling listen for the first two books; Cynthia Erivo is a wonderful actor in general but this was a recitation more than a narration. I found it so hard to differentiate who was speaking and where I was in the story because all the characters sound alike and the tone was flat. The first half of the book was whispered and the second half I felt like I was being shouted at about unrelenting violence and genocide. If you love this series please don’t read this book…make up your own ending and enjoy it.
