The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

adventurous dark sad tense slow-paced
  • Strong character development? Yes

4.5

I loved this book until the last several chapters. Personally, I feel like there was too much misfortune and wild scenarios packed in, making it feel inauthentic at times. The story would seem to be in a place where it could be wrapped up and then another sad or crazy event would occur.
Particularly after the dad was dead,
much of the remaining story felt unnecessarily drawn-out. I was especially annoyed by the chapter where Leni returns to Alaska
and confesses everything to the sheriff just to be briefly taken into custody.
It felt so forced and silly.
If the story had been tied up sooner and in a cleaner way, this would have been 5 stars but it just lost me at the end.
