Affair by Amanda Quick

5.0

I remember reading Wicked Widow years ago, and also vaguely thought I'd read another of Amanda Quick's books. This was the feeling I got as I read this story. Haven't I read this before? Nah I don't remember that, but this seems familiar. I read this mostly during breaks at work so it took my forever to get through so the fact that it took nearly two months to get through this book was simply because I picked a busy place to read and it wasn't until tonight that I decided to hunker down and finish this story at long last. So Affair begins with Charlotte defending her little sister's honour. Their stepfather has blown through the family fortune since marrying their mother and following her death it has left her two daughters vulnerable to his money making schemes. One of them is to sell Charlotte's little sister Ariel's aged fourteen virginity a plan Charlotte overhears. She threatens the men with an empty pistol and manages to scare them off. The next day the stepfather is found dead believed to have been killed by a mugger. Several years later Charlotte is a successful business woman investigating the backgrounds of men for the older more vulnerable wealthy women who wish to marry them. She is aided in this by Ariel and her housekeeper and a man of affairs. Her current man of affairs has retired and in her quest for a new one enters Baxter. He is the bastard son of a Lord, a scientist and was sent by his aunt to help investigate the murder of a friend of hers believing Charlotte is the killer, not knowing the true nature of her business. Despite not liking each other at first there are sparks between them and as they get pulled deep into an investigation that leads them to mesmerizing, gambling dens and the darker side of society they begin to fall in love. This was quite an enjoyable read, funny at times suspenseful and engaging. I just wish I could remember if I had read it before.
