All the Little Lights by Jamie McGuire
4.0

Okay. This book has definitely served me a cocktail of mixed emotions. Here’s why:

The 1)st one, and maybe some will think me neurotic, but, dear Jamie McGuire: it’s useD to, not “use to”. I’m not a native English speaker and I know it, come on. It wasn’t just once or twice, it was repeated during the whole book, starting from the very beginning.

“Oak Creek wasn’t the desolate disappointment my mom described, but it was a whole lot of use tos. Oak Creek use to have a strip mall, use to have a TG&Y, use to have an arcade, use to have tennis courts”

I swear to God this is an actual passage of the second page in this book and I spent the whole reading time cringing every time the expression “use to” came on because I just *knew* the term would be misspelled. That absolutely drove me mad.

2) Some of the facts of this book were far-fetched to say the least. To think a couple born in 1999 wouldn’t be able to communicate at all? In 2014, everyone had a cell phone. I’m sorry, unlikely. Also the whole family drama thing with Elliot, it was just unnecessary and it never proved important to the plot.

3) Their love story. Big cringe. It made the book longer than necessary, and to what aim? The story with her old friends, her new friends, the racism problem with Elliot - it was just a bunch of things thrown together and honestly it made for a long book in vain.

4) The BEST thing of this book and the only reason I’m giving it a 4 star review is the marvellous plot twist that caught me so off guard in the end I was dumbstruck. Understanding Catherine after all the comings and goings of the book made them worthy. I wish the author had cut some crap, but honestly, I’m happy I read it just for the awesome plot twist. And to think I was almost going to abandon this book. I’m grateful I didn’t, even though that’s the SOLE thing I loved from this book.
