I rated The Way of Kings pretty high because of the way it all came together into one fantastic scene. On this book, nothing quite comes close, and the overall experience of it wasn't quite as good either.

I think the one disadvantage this book has is its length. At 400,000 words, I think it just tried to cover too many events, resulting in a narrative where the beginning section was so far removed from the final chapters that they had little to do with each other and should have been different books. The plot wasn't cohesive enough to make me believe it was all one book. This novel is also less focused and concise than the previous one. I also think a few subplots that were set up but didn't go anywhere.

Do I hate this book? Far from it. But I also think the flaws mentioned above make it merely a good story, not a great one.
