Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw

5.0

Nothing But Blackened Teeth was a TRIP, so much so that I listened to it again right afterward. Cassandra Khaw has written a phenomenal story. The audiobook for the novella hit at under an hour and a half at 1.8x speed when you use the Libro.fm app. So you’ve got a group of friends—horror tourists, essentially. Mr. Moneybags over here flies four of his friends to Japan first class and they’re staying in a haunted mansion. Something about an unassuming white boy with an inheritance seems…right, in a horror story.

So the viewpoint is that Cat is blamed for an almost-breakup and her being in attendance was out of pity. Lin, likewise, is called unwanted. Sure, they’ve all known each other since they were children but it was a little harsh. Lookin’ at you, Talia. Talia’s the whole reason they’re there, apparently so she’s clearly a thrill seeker—enough to want to get married in a place where allegedly a large number of young women were buried alive. Bridezilla, amirite or amirite? Next we’ve got the strapping young men of the group—aforementioned Philip aka Mr. Moneybags, seriously he’s so fuckin’ rich; Faiz, the groom-to-be and Cat’s best friend; Lin, a man who was once involved with Cat, but then went and married someone else. It’s an incredible time following this group as the story moves along.

The prose is written beautifully. The way Khaw use descriptive language is among the best I’ve experienced. It had me rewinding the audio so often just to listen to how something was phrased another time. A gorgeous horror story 10/10
