The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
5.0
I would give this 10 stars if I could. This book is stunning in every sense of the word. It’s poignant, raw, gritty, beautiful, heartbreaking, infuriating, satisfying… I could go on. But as someone that reads close to or over 100 books a year this is one that will stick with me in a very serious way for a long time.
The subject matter is difficult and could be a problem for some but it felt so important to talk about. Ephraim is one of the only nearly flawless male characters I’ve read in a historical fiction novel and Martha is the beacon of strength and hope in a dark storm. I laughed, I gasped, I cried (multiple times), I was happy, angry, sad, shocked, etc. It really drew me in from page one and never let me go. I could drone on but huge praise to Ariel on her ability to tell one hell of a story and her talent to do it so beautifully.
