Blind Rage

Overall rating: 3 stars
Quick Take/Synopsis of Review:
I applaud the author's unique apocalyptic "zombie-like" concept in this novel and recommend it to fans of the genre. The story quickly picks up with violence, which is refreshing. The frequent shifts between characters each chapter is frustrating and confusing, especially when some characters seem to be expendable fillers. I found it hard to like most of the characters, as their flaws greatly overshadowed their redeeming qualities. I hope to see more depth and liveliness from the main characters in the second book. Despite my gripes, I will be reading the second book to see how the characters handle the cliffhangers.
Complete Review:
I commend the author for their unique apocalyptic "zombie-like" concept in this novel and recommend it for fans of this genre. For a zombie horror book, it built pretty quickly to action and violence, which is a refreshing change. Some books of this genre, especially the first in a series, take too long to build to the apocalyptic aspects of the story. The balance between setting up the series and providing action was well done.
The shifting of characters, and thus areas in Denmark, with each chapter was just as frustrating as it was interesting. In theory, it would allow readers to get to know main characters, but unexpected character spotlights were confusing and felt unnecessary. Some of said characters felt more like cannon fodder fillers than deserving of their own chapters. Why bother giving them a chapter if they were sitting in death's chair?
This brings me to my main gripe, which is the characters being unlikable. Their flaws overshadowed their redeeming qualities. John was the only character I found myself drawn to. I really hope to see more depth and liveliness from the main characters in the sequel, rather than just constant negativity and flaws in the limelight. Despite these gripes, I will continue reading the second book to see how the characters deal with the cliffhangers from the first book.
