The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles
5.0
Very different subject matter and tone than the other book I've read by Amor Towles (Gentleman in Moscow), this was surprisingly EXCELLENT. Coming of age story set in the 1950's - 4 boys play out an elaborate, fly by the seat of your pants escapade to New York City from a boys detention center in Salina, Kansas. Towles weaves an engaging, fast moving plot with great character development, with elaborate back stories and high drama. Reminds me of a Huckleberry Finn/Tom Sawyer dynamic with older characters, or very reminiscent of William Kent Kreuger (This Tender Land, Ordinary Grace). It's long, but the plotline made this super easy to race through. My favorite character by far was Sally, the neighbor's daughter to Billy and Emmett, who doesn't plan on settling down anytime soon to be anybody's live in caretaker (YASSS!). If you were debating this one, push it up on the TBR list!
