Glad I read this shortly after the last. The last left me a little depressed for Alex as he judged himself and a few of his "friends" were on the outs with him due to judgment calls also. I thought all were very unfair judgments as he almost always is defending himself or those he cares about when these questions arise. Does overkill have something to do with it, or premeditation, sure but as he says and I do, "what choice did he have?", die himself, continue to get attacked? Nope... so the last book ends with a division among friends.
So we see that 2 of the 4 biggest judges of Alex actual support him, 2 he seems to have lost forever. Ann is doing her own thing and refused Alex's help. Then ... is working for the light council and he really is a judgmental DW. Ann is because of her past, seeing people die affects her in really bad ways. So when the lack of protection from friends puts Ann at risk, even though she refused Alex's offer before, Alex steps in again. Time to find Ann and see who is pulling the strings.
This was great and it made Ann and Alex understand one another better. Do the gang get back together, well you have to read it. Still, it will never be the same.
