Murtagh by Christopher Paolini
3.0
I don't really know how to rate this book. I am one of those people who devoured Eragon as a young teenager when it came out so this felt like a return, and a nicely done one too.
Murtagh is an excellent character. In the way his trauma shaped him and Thorn and their relationship and how they interact with the world. This was done extremely well I think. Their humor was funny, their actions flawed and believable. Thorn's absolute panic was described so well.
Unfortunately the main plot kind of fell off after the first half I think. The first half felt like an adventure novel, it was really fun. The werecats, the fishing trip. Mr. Stabby the enchanted fork.
The second half was just kind of boring as we get to the cult city. The last 2 hours I was just wishing for it to be over already.
What I was really happy about was Murtagh's reluctance to contact Eragon. Like from a meta standpoint it makes me happy this was all Murtagh - no Eragon involved. This is his adventure.
Now. I consumed this as an audiobook. NOT a fan of the choice of accent. I kind of got charmed by it by the ens but this seriously changed my perception of Murtagh as a character and took me out of immersion many times.
