This book was really fun to read as a spooky, nostalgic, teen novel. The horror wasn’t as intense as I expected other than the iconic tapeworm scene but I thought it was well balanced with the true horror being the small things that added up. I have to say, Grady Hendrix’s weird addition of racism in his books always seems unnecessary. I understand trying to say this is accurate to the south in the 80s, but it never furthers the plot. Gretchen forcing Abby to remove her makeup did not have to be explained by “it’s slave day.” The ending was rushed and disappointing, but overall I enjoyed reading and would recommend as a lighter horror read.
Graphic: Body horror, Eating disorder, Mental illness, Violence, Blood, Murder, Gaslighting, Toxic friendship
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Animal death, Bullying, Racism
