The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim

5.0

Wow. I dread returning this to the library so much, I’ll definitely be picking up a copy for my personal collection. If Jane Austen had scripted a season of The Real World, this story could be the product of such collaboration. Think 1920’s, dreary London winter weather, 4 women all unhappy in their own ways, yet they come together randomly for an Italian spring holiday in Italy. Initially they are suspicious and guarded with each other, stuck in their own existential ruminations. But the holiday turns their spirits around so they can be vulnerable with each other and ultimately with their partners and lives. Although the plot certainly climaxes near the end in a very awkward and hilarious manner, most of the story takes place in the characters minds. The reader learns a great deal about each of these women and their regrets, quirks, and ultimate desires. I will be reading this again next spring and will certainly add Elizabeth Von Arnim to my TBR!
