In Cold Blood by Jane Bettany
3.0
A generous three stars. It wasn’t bad, but it fell through as a crime novel. I don’t know how to describe it well enough in English (as it isn’t my first language) but there was soooo many words. Most «talked» sentences were long winded and very descriptive, and there wasn’t much left to imagination. An example is when the daughter says her father has promised her a dog, and Isabel answers
«What? I don’t think so, Ellie. Owning a dog is a big commitment - and not one to to be taken lightly. That kind of decision has to be discussed properly and considered very carefully».
No one talks like that, and it makes the reading rather too serious and a bit pompous for a supposed crime novel. All the convenient letters were also a cheap way to move the case along.
For a debut it’s decent enough, but maybe the writer is better suited for regular novels?
