It pains me to give a one star rating for any book, but I felt this was warranted.
I had high expectations coming into this book. I found the teacher/student dynamic to be an interesting one, especially with the teacher being a woman. I really wanted to be challenged and this book set it up nicely. A teacher, barely 22, who is shy and withdrawn but wants to make friends is drawn to a gregarious student, not much younger than she. I thought maybe this would expand my idea of relationships and consent (similar to All the Ugly and Wonderful Things) but it fell flat. I couldn't get through the entire book because I was so bothered by the main character, Imogene and her constant whining and nagging. She was so self-conscious to the point of being obnoxious and she was hardly a believable character. At 22, I would hope you would begin to grow into your own skin and stop 1. picking at it insistently and 2. tearing yourself down every other second of the day. More time was spent on her own insecurities rather than the relationship.
Thank you to the publisher for providing this book, all opinions are my own.
