Sour Cherry by Natalia Theodoridou
4.0
dark mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

A "Bluebeard" retelling, rewoven with a clarifying lens on domestic violence and misogyny.

"Sour Cherry" drips with sadness, a tired voice that has repeated this story for generations, creating a chain of trauma. The man behind it all is mythically powerful yet eternally wounded, his path of destruction inevitable.

Natalia Theodoridou kept me captive throughout, and I loved his approach of guiding us in and out of the heavy texture of folklore, breaking the wall and resettling us into the stark tragedy of the present. At the end, I do wish there was less hand-holding, and that we were allowed to assume what we already knew, which was beautifully and tragically defined since the beginning.

You'll appreciate this if you're interested in changed perspectives on classics (like "James"), ghostly settings and exquisite writing.
