Honestly, the first 3/4 of this book are sooooo slow. It allows time to fully establishing all the characters relationships and personalities, but most of it was mundane traveling, and after a while it began to feel very repetitive.
Also, regrettably, Silla is pretty annoying throughout the first section of the book. I love the idea of a softer FMC, but I feel like she was pushed to the extreme of being just so bubbly and naive that I often felt frustrated with her. She does get much more likable as she gains more confidence in herself and her abilities.
I appreciated that this was not necessarily “Romantasy” - it shares elements of the genre but the romance is far from the focus. The worldbuilding is very grounded and well-thought out, and I loved the way the language and society tied to Icelandic/nordic cultures - I visited Iceland a few months ago and I could definitely tell it was an inspiration, with the road of bones being similar to the Icelandic ring-road.
I feel like honestly, most of the early/middle section could be cut down and this condensed into one longer book with the sequel. It might not be quite 3 stars but I didn’t think it was a terrible read, and anything lower feels a bit harsh. I’m hoping the next one is faster paced, but I’m left with enough questions that I think the next one is worth a read.
