Darwin's Radio by Greg Bear

I expected sci-fi and got speculative fiction, so things went downhill as soon as I started this book. I was driven absolutely crazy by the author's (and characters') insistence on calling female scientists "Ms." or "Mrs." and male scientists "Dr." I found it really distracting and kind of infuriating.

Some of the wild speculation about evolutionary "mechanism" also bothered me. I liked it enough to finish it. The imagination of the "Homo sapiens novus" phenotype was pretty interesting, so I guess I'm glad I stuck with it that long.
