Travelling Light by Tove Jansson

I like how uncommercial these stories are, and how they are literary fiction while still having a heart in them. I don't mean that they have heart in the sense of being squooshy and heartwarming; just that they aren't empty in the way a lot of New Yorker-style fiction feels. They are stories about people who are stubbornly themselves.

My favourite is probably the one about the professor in the Spanish town who tries to smooth over a disagreement between two expats, because she was so well-meaning. There is definitely a common thread between these and the Moomin books but I couldn't tell you how they're similar -- just that they are.
