Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup
by John Carreyrou
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is in stranger-than-fiction territory. It is incredible that Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos were able to fool so many for so long. Titillating subplots include espionage, intergenerational romance, sabotage, villainy, and heroism. It has it all. The book is well-researched, and I thought that Carreyrou handled his own insertion into the story well.
The book is written at a very accessible level. Middle school level diction. My inner snob would have liked higher-brow prose. I expect that Carreyrou was aiming for a wide audience, and I should not have expected differently.
Carreyrou does explore, to some degree, why Elizabeth Holmes was able to hoodwink so many successful people. Her gender, good looks, youth, and charisma are among the reasons. I do, however, wish that he had dug a little deeper. Her con game was at the heart of the story, and her magic trick needed more exploration.
