The Stoning of Soraya M.: A Story of Injustice in Iran by Freidoune Sahebjam, Richard Seaver

It is impossible to rate this book with the star system. One of the most horrific things I've ever read. A woman is stoned to death. Here is her story. How does one rate that? By the writing? The writing is fine - good and clear and effective. By its effect on the reader? The effect is to leave this reader staggered with a sense of injustice and fury and pity and grief and loathing.

But that changes nothing. This is not, as some may well try to frame it, an anti-Muslim book. The author makes it clear this is a case of the worst of human nature taking advantage of the worst of human stupidity and opportunism and misogyny. Ignorance and tribalism fuel the blood lust. Islam is made ill-use of and is perverted by human evil. What religion must not admit to the same.

What is terribly clear in this book is that women throughout the world are at terrible, terrible risk, and there is little we do to change that. I suspect I'll have bad dreams for a long time. I also know that changes nothing. God help us.
