I am once again astounded at the level of detail and character an author is able to get into 90 pages!
Finishing the novella I felt like I knew, really knew, our main cast and wanted to root so much for them.

The World Akhtar has created feels realistically bleek but also full of wonder and mystery. I loved that even at our MCs darkest, she constantly sought for the light. She made for such a unique and easy character to follow.

The story is set midway through a seige of a city by our main character's Country. The seige as we know it has been going on for months with no end in sight and our MC (Darya) is given one last chance to prove herself in battle.
I LOVE Darya as our PoV. She's not only relentless in her need to survive, she's also a mother of adult children, making her a rare example of "women past their 30s having a life outside of the home". It was such a refreshing take to have her be unquestionably a warrior and a mother, neither overpowering the other.

Akhtar's prose in this novella is so well developed I couldn't imagine them not being better known for their work. Turns out Akhtar is also the author of Gun Metal God's! A series I have heard unending praise for and makes complete sense if it's anything similar to this.

I look forward to joining the hype train!
