Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
5.0

This classic has been on my radar for decades, but I got around to reading it finally at the recommendation of the director of my upcoming teaching internship. So glad I did! It is not easy going -- the representation of the brutal and degrading treatment of a proud black family in 1930's Mississippi is enough to make you cry (and should be required reading for anyone who questions the need for a Black Lives Matter movement and other efforts to address a long history of racial injustice in the U.S.) It will be interesting to read it with students!

Okay -- now I've read it again (yes, in the same year), this time with students. What a fabulous book for classroom discussion with 6th grade students. This novel is rich on so many levels -- kids were super engaged with everything from the societal and economic structures of racism to the personal choices the Logan children had to make when it came to issues of dealing with prejudice and with their own personal relationships. Highly, highly recommended for the classroom.
