In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

"They never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it's just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it."

This is truly a masterfully crafted work. I knew it was a pioneer in the true crime genre, but did not know much of the backstory. It read much like a novel, but also was clear that it was a journalistic novel. That being said, the confusion of what parts of the novel were slightly embellished took away somewhat from the read. Also, I found myself wanting more of Capote as a character in the novel. So much of the richness of the history of the book and its impact comes from his involvement in the town and I did not feel that while reading - only after the fact as I read some articles about his process, how long the book took to write, some of the criticisms of his involvement, etc. But overall a fantastic true crime novel. I think I like the trial section the best.
