Title: Inch by Inch

Age Appropriateness:
  • I think this book is best for a young audience, probably K-2nd grade. There is no heavy content and is easy to follow.
Summary:
  • This story is about an inchworm protecting itself from a robin by demonstrating its skill– measuring things by using its body. It travels around measuring different animals until it is threatened by a nightingale. The worm outsmarts the nightingale by inching away until it is out of sight.
Review:
  • This book could be used for young students to get them thinking about math (measuring things by inches). An idea would be to make inchworms and have students take their worms around the classroom after the story to measure things. This gets the students up moving and on an independent task. During their independent time, it allows you to walk around checking on students' understanding. Once they’re done, you can all meet back together and see if you gathered the same and help students understand if maybe they misunderstood.
