All American Boys by Jason Reynolds, Brendan Kiely

4.0

An excellent story about how race affects every situations, whether we want to acknowledge it or not. I feel like Reynolds and Kiely captured Rashad and Quinn's voices very well and presented a fair story about a two kids swept up in something bigger than themselves. This situation is made easier because we are in Rashad's head and we know he wasn't doing anything wrong and that he wasn't resisting arrest, but in reality, these situations are much more complicated and that is the only thing that I feel was lost here. Although a lot of good points were made here, I feel like the subtleties of both sides could have been better demonstrated if there were more shades of grey.
