Plenty to enjoy here and Asimov’s reputation as one of science fiction’s greatest ideas men is well earned with this collection. It has hard not to draw immediate parallels between feelings towards AI in today’s society and the collective scepticism of robots that characterise most stories in this collection. Galley Slave in particular hits close to the core of the issue we are seeing in academia today - whereby students are relying on AI more and more to produce their work and the notion of academia itself potentially being reduced to little more than supposedly intelligent and educated people being little more than prompt writers.

As with all Asimov I’ve read there is an economy of language - the writing is straightforward and allows the ideas to take centre stage rather than the prose itself.

Also as with all Asimov I’ve read he does a terrible bordering offensive job writing female characters. Yes Susan Calvin is smarter than all the men she meets but she is also invariably joyless, sexless and single track minded. She is firmly rooted in that old school sexism of Asimov’s time.

Overall a sometimes fantastic, sometimes bland collection of works by one of science fiction’s greatest.
