This was a very good start to a series I am very excited about continuing. This book was my first foray into epic space opera sci-fi and overall I thought was a great book.

I really enjoyed Ruocchio's character work as well as the bulk of the worldbuilding he introduced in the story. You can tell he is really passionate about everything involved with the story.

Where I started to lose stride with the book is the very often history info dumping and the pacing. You can tell he is excited to tell everyone the vast history he has created and typically I don't have an issue with info dumps but it really affected the pacing overall. On top of that, there were a few plot points that I felt went on for quite a while that ultimately I felt ended up being pointless to the ending of this book.

Overall none of my complaints hindered my experience too much and I am excited with the series.
