The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley
5.0

An excellent first volume. Tightly written, with some stand out scenes and compelling characters. Works well as a stand-alone novel whilst having enough unresolved mystery to draw me back for more. Great world-building, though a lot of it remains on the periphery as, in this volume, the storylines retain a more personal focus. There is a clear intimation that a larger, more epic, storyline will come centre stage in the next book, and Brian Staveley certainly gives you the feeling that you are in good hands.
