Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier

I wasn't really sure what to expect with this book. I was familiar with the cover, but thought it looked a little stuffy & boring. I hadn't read any reviews either, but plunged into it prior to an upcoming trip to Holland. So I went in with no expectations at all: which I'm kind of glad about, because I don't think I could have expected this. I really really loved it, especially the way it danced around love and loss and longing in ways that were seldom explicit: more is told with looks and touches than anything else, in a way that can only really be described as exquisite. It felt very unique, very fresh, very interesting. I do think that the ending was a little rushed, but that also carried with it a lot of effect: that life goes on. I also think the character of Cornelia was used a little too much, moving the story along in ways that seemed maybe unrealistic or even unfair, but equally, who doesn't love a slightly wicked child! I'm really glad I didn't judge this one by it's cover forever, and I have an absolute new appreciation for the cover itself. A good read.
