Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik

4.0

I'm a little conflicted over this book, but mainly just because I'm splitting hairs. The majority of this story takes place at sea, and that part of the book is just *chefs kiss* yes. Good. The parts on land, both in England and then in China are...I find the politics to be a bit...ehhhhh.....simple. And a bit contrived. It feels like there should be more to the political side than just trade and British expansionism, and it's kind of a let down to see that even this vastly different China-with-dragons is still so vulnerable to European manipulation.

Also Temeraire's naivety is starting to give me anxiety! But I'm really looking forward to his future socio-political activism for dragon liberty.
