Lords of the North by Bernard Cornwell
4.0

This instalment of Uhtred's story picked up the pace quite a bit from [b:The Pale Horseman|68528|The Pale Horseman (The Saxon Stories, #2)|Bernard Cornwell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1421710510s/68528.jpg|891875].

It was also a book full of surprising turns that I did not see coming until they happened. It was really hard to put down after the first section, and I ended up reading most of it in a nail-biting rush during a single evening.

I liked Hild and her story. There was a real [b:Hild|17332243|Hild|Nicola Griffith|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1375931640s/17332243.jpg|24035877] in history, and I like to think that this is the same one we meet here with Uhtred. Throughout these 3 books, Uhtred has treated his women with respect and kindness, traits that I would not necessarily expect from a hardened warrior in a time and country torn apart by wars.

Speaking of wars. This time we don't exactly get an all-out war, but a lot of skirmishes and a shoving each other around jostling for power in the kingdoms. So lots of little wars. I liked the politics in this book, the way people ally themselves with the most unlikely opponents, only to turn on each other when the wind blows another direction.

This book also contains my favourite scene of the series yet, but I won't spoil it for you.
