Doña Perfecta is a perfect example of the "two Spains" described by Antonio Machado in his poem regarding the Spanish Civil War. Galdós forsees the trouble coming and places it all in the "Heart of Spain"--the ficitonal town of Orbajosa. The romance of Pepe Rey and Rosario will hook you, and Perfecta's conniving plot to get rid of her nephew will keep you coming back for more.
