John Perry at 75 has lived a good life but that life is now coming to an end ten years ago he and his wife had signed up to become CDF soldiers when they both become 75 but she died before that happened and now John has to go and complete his obligation and enlist on his birthday.
Not knowing how they turn the old into soldiers since the people who man the CDF recruitment offices aren't soldiers they just recruit people and only have what they need to know. Some recruits summise they replace organs but in reality they get new everything including body.
John knows he has either two years service or the whole ten years but as he fights the aliens they come across he discovers he is good at what he does and he has to fight so he can live out the rest of his days as a colonist.
