House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas

4.0

Everything ending in a nicely wrapped bow was so nice, though I love the side-character arcs that were left often ended for future books. I overall really enjoyed this!

I wish we got more of the Night Court, and I was incredibly disappointed in the lack of Feyre. While I am a huge Nesta fan (she is my favorite Archeron) and am so happy that she will have a continuing storyline with the Starsword, it felt like Feyre was relegated to the role I was scared of when the pregnancy trope happened. This was the perfect chance to show Feyre as both badass High Lady and mother, but she is absent other than being Rhys’s invisible “voice of reason” back at home during the bonus chapter. I wish she was in the interrogation and in the conversations with Nesta and that it wasn’t just Rhys ruling the Night Court.

There were moments when Bryce irked me. While I loved her arc from party girl to intelligent and clever war general, I hated that she always kept everyone out of the loop with her grand plans. It felt so out of character for her, someone that prides herself on unity of the people. Along the same vein, she was incredibly dismissive of things anyone else wanted to focus on. If it wasn’t complete dedication to her plan, she was frustrated and angry, which also felt contradictory for a character so reliant on the power of love.

I also really enjoyed Sathia pushing Bryce on her disdain toward the fae and what that truly means, especially when condemning a group of victims in that society.

While those are lengthy “complaint” paragraphs, I really really
enjoyed this.

And lastly, BIG Lidia fan. Easily my favorite in this series.
